Letting Go of the Need for Control: A Path to Peace and Surrender
By Dr. KJ Foster | Fostering Resilience
Do you ever feel like you're holding on too tightly, gripping every outcome, every decision, every uncertain possibility? If so, you're not alone. The need to control is something many of us experience, especially in times of anxiety, fear, or recovery.
But as I shared in Devotional #6 from Seeds of Serenity Volume I, true serenity is found not in control, but in surrender.
In my latest Fostering Resilience video, I read this devotional aloud, reflecting on the spiritual invitation to let go and trust in a power greater than ourselves.
Letting go of control doesn’t mean we stop caring. It means we stop trying to manipulate or force things to go our way. It means we choose faith over fear.
“When I release my need to control, I experience peace. It’s in that release that I am reminded that I’m not alone, and that God is always with me.”
Letting go is not a one-time act. It’s a daily practice. Sometimes, it’s a moment-by-moment choice.
In my book "Seeds of Serenity" Volume 1, Devotional #6 and the corresponding YouTube video, I speak honestly about my own journey with control and how it showed up in my life—especially during difficult seasons of addiction, anxiety, and codependency.
But I also talk about the beauty and strength that comes with surrender. When we stop striving to fix everything on our own, we create space for healing. We allow grace to enter. We gain access to clarity, calm, and spiritual support.
Whether you’re in recovery, struggling with anxiety, or simply feeling overwhelmed by life’s demands, I invite you to pause today and listen to this short devotional message. Let it serve as a reminder that you don’t have to carry it all or figure everything out. You are allowed to rest. You are safe to trust.
